Unions called for the strike following a handful of dismissals of train employees.

The strike was announced Saturday, following a meeting between union representatives and the Vice Minister of Transport Cesare De Piccoli.

Trenitalia said the majority of the faster Intercity and Eurostar trains would run throughout the day, and that trains on regional routes would be in service during peak commuter hours.
